Reference Criteria

The interview and references
The interview lasts approximately 50-90 minutes, and will be conducted in English on a one-to-one basis.
You are required to bring the following items to interview:
  • A printed copy of your Application for Interview – please do not forget this, it will be required for review at interview.
  • You will be required to pay (no cash please) or show proof of payment online (printed receipt) at the interview. Cheques should only be bank cheques and be made out to Camp America. (Please go to your bank to convert money from your account into a Bank Cheque)
  • Photographic proof of identification
Reference criteria – important
You need details of at least 2 referees which meet the following reference criteria:
  • must have known you for at least 6 months and had some professional contact in the last 12 months in a professional or educational or coaching capacity (baby-sitting references can’t be accepted)
  • must provide full professional contact details (business contact not personal) – gmail and hotmail emails will not suffice
  • they will be asked to confirm the capacity in which they’ve known you and for how long
  • they will be requested to discuss your personality and capabilities, and your suitability for working on a summer camp
  • Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, Xtra emails (etc) will not suffice. The email must clearly identify the referee and the organisation, business or company they own or work for.
  • For example e.g. fred@flyingunicorns.co.nz is perfect is Fred at Flying Unicorns is your referee. But info@flyingunicorns.co.nz is not good enough (there is no way of knowing who sees the emails to info – and therefore anyone could reply as the referee)
  • The referee must still work at the business the applicant knew/knows them through, for verification purposes
  • Referees must not be a colleague but a manager, supervisor, boss, tutor, teacher or coach etc.
  • Personal references are not acceptable – must be professional so we can verify, e.g. babysitting for someone is personal
In addition you must bring:
  • A copy of the photo page of your passport (please note, you can still attend an interview if you do not yet have a passport, but please apply for one as soon as possible).
  • and a completed police check form at interview.
The interview and the paperwork (online and actual paper references) can be the most challenging part of the whole application process.
We must prove to the US Government that you are the right kind of person that we should be sponsoring to work in USA at camp.
Camp is the best thing I have ever done. Knowing that you are greatly appreciated by the kids and staff and making lifelong friends who I keep in-touch with. -Kelly F from Wellington
